WASHINGTON, DC (April 7, 2022) – The North America Caribbean Training Method (NACTM) will lead its first Caribbean Identification Combine with Trinidad & Tobago U-20 and Senior Men’s National Team Head Coach Angus Eve from April 16-17 at the Edgewood Recreation Center in Washington, D.C. The camp will feature 45 elite level male players between the ages of 15-25 years old.

All of the coaches have United States Soccer Federation Licenses and have experience working with a wide range of players from the youth level to professional. 

Many players called up to the Combine came from the recommendations of several scouts, coaches, and agents from across the country. A lot of credit goes to Sean Powder, a Tobagonian, and the Head of the former TTFA program Talent Identification Player Pool Programme (TIPP) who has developed an extensive database with eligible players. Dario Trujillo, a Trinidadian and the owner of Central Brooklyn Soccer Club who recommended players from the New York area, and Wendell Moore, another Tobagonian who recommended players from the Atlanta area and throughout Europe. There are many more to thank who have contributed to such a diverse roster, but if we had to thank them all then we would be writing all day.  

Over 40 teams are represented on the roster and they range from clubs to colleges. Players are coming from as far north as Ontario, Canada and as far south as Miami, FL. Players are also flying in from European countries such as England and Austria for the Combine.   

Players are vying for a spot on the U-20 Trinidad & Tobago Football Association CONCACAF Qualifiers scheduled for June 18 – July 3, 2022. Senior level players are vying to be added to the Senior National Team pool for upcoming tournaments such as the Nations League set to begin in June 2022. 

The NACTM-T&T Combine is a collaboration between DC Parks and Recreation, the United Football Coaches of Trinidad & Tobago, and the Trinidad & Tobago Association of Washington, D.C.

What to expect at the T&T U-20 Men’s Football Combine in D.C. in April

Many people have asked what to expect at the upcoming U-20 Trinidad & Tobago Men’s Football Combine in Washington, D.C. from April 16-17, 2022, so we felt the need to address the expectations. But before we layout how we foresee the Combine operating which we can assure you will be nothing short of a high standard, we first want to provide a short history on what is the North America Caribbean Training Method (NATCM), how the program got started, and the most important question why are we doing this?

In late 2019 following the appointment of former Trinidad & Tobago Football Association (TTFA) President William Wallace, I, Justin Reid the NACTM Director of Camps, wrote an article and published it on the Soca Warriors website laying out a plan for the TTFA. The attached article was also shared on the blacksoccercoaches.org website labeled “Where to now? A plan for the next four years of the TTFA.”

Fast forward to what would have been year three of the plan and who would have ever thought that the TTFA would have been normalized by FIFA and that Covid-19 would have shutdown sport in the the country for nearly two years. Backtrack to 2019, the article caught the eye of then Technical Committee Chair Keith Look Loy who contacted me to help to develop a program that identifies players born in North America of Trinbagonian descent. Look Loy also reached out to Sean Powder, businessman and father of TTFA National team player and Major League Soccer (MLS) player Noah Powder, who is based in New Jersey, in addition to a former player of his Johann Contaste who was based in Washington state at the time, but has since relocated to Texas to become the Athletic Director of Idea Public Schools. Powder and I would brainstorm for weeks and we finally came up with a program that would soon be called the Talent Identification Player Pool Programme (TIPP).

Now, the concept of the TIPP program wasn’t anything new to the TTFA because several coaches based in North America had identified players of Trinbagonian descent. Anthony Lambert at Champs Academy in Brooklyn had invited then and now TTFA Technical Director Anton Corneal to Brooklyn about 6 years ago, and Wendell Moore, based in the Atlanta area had invited then U-17 Head Coach Stern John to evaluate players. However, what made the TIPP program a little different was the fact that we brought the Trinbagonian diaspora in football together to do its part to help football in Trinidad & Tobago. Within a short period of time the TIPP developed into a network of nearly 30 coaches and scouts throughout North America who would identify nearly 300 players of Trinbagonian descent from ages 11 – 19. It was a volunteer based program because the TTFA didn’t have the funds, but we were 30 volunteers who love and still love T&T so keeping up the energy of the program would not have been a problem. The program was instrumental in sending eight players from North America to the U-20 Women’s CONCACAF Qualifiers in the Dominican Republic in March 2020. However, the program was short-lived following FIFA’s normalization of the TTFA in early 2020 and the TIPP was later dissolved as scouting outside of Trinidad & Tobago was no longer a priority. So we thought to ourselves that no matter what other programs we had operating under the NACTM, we had to make the Caribbean ID program a priority especially for Trinidad & Tobago our origin even if it meant funding the launch of the program out of our own pockets.

In April 2020, two other TTFA scouts Myron Garnes, Ashton Baptiste, and I thought about how we could keep the program going in addition to promoting coaches of Caribbean descent. So we launched the NACTM. The program was meant to host camps for players of Caribbean descent, however, that model didn’t seem to be feasible as the pandemic left alot of uncertainty in not only the Caribbean but also throughout the US and Canada. In April, I was set to travel to Barbados with five college coaches to conduct a College Combine for the high school aged players in the country. However, when Barbados began shutting down so did the Combine and it never launched. So the NACTM decided to pivot not to just host Combines but to also host camps for players as young as five. In 2021, camps were hosted between Orlando, FL to Baltimore, MD serving nearly 200 players in 7 locations. This year, the NACTM has expanded to seven types of programs categorized to serve players who are in the developmental stage (5-12 year olds) and those in the competitive stage (13 years and up).

So why are we hosting the T&T U-20 Men’s Combine? Part of the TIPP initiative was to do Combines to identify players across the U.S. and Canada. However with the program disbanding, we knew that the TIPP nor the TTFA could fund such a program. So in the last year, we began soliciting sponsorships throughout the Washington, D.C. area to help fund the Combine. Those sponsorships came from both business owners with ties to Trinidad & Tobago, to those who just love visiting Trinidad & Tobago. Though challenging due to most small businesses either at a standstill or now having recovered from the damage of COVID-19 on small businesses, the NACTM was able to raise nearly $8,000 to fund this event. Meaning that unlike other Combines, it was able to keep the cost for the player low at $75 as opposed to $250 or more which most Combines may cost. To keep the Combine even more cost effective, we blocked rooms at the Rennaisance Marriott because during the Easter weekend, Washington, D.C. is very busy, well pre-pandemic, and this is mainly because of the National Cherry Blossom Festival that has returned in 2022.

The sponsorship funds also helped to purchase uniforms for each player at the Combine, pay the coaches who will be conducting the training and managing the teams, and in one case pay for a coach’s travel expenes, pay referees, in addition to purchasing a new VEO camera that uses WIFI and will broadcast the Combine via the NACTM Facebook page for those back in T&T can see the talent that is heading their way.

We vow that this Combine will be nothing short of spectacular and we will have a special surprise guest :). There will only be 42 players invited and we will split the players up into 3 teams (red, black, and white) of 14. Each player will have a numbered jersey, all of the same color shorts (black), and all of the same colored socks (black) sponsored by Squadra. Each team will have a coach who will take them through warm-ups, training for an hour, replenishment break, and games. The games will be round-robin of 30 minutes a game allowing each player to show his or her talent for up to 60 minutes on Saturday and 60 minutes on Sunday. While we can’t predict the outcome of each player and who Head Coach Angus Eve will select to travel to Trinidad & Tobago to represent the U-20 National team, we are excited for the players as this is a chance of a lifetime. Although our goal will always be to compliment the national teams with additional players who can help the teams to compete and win matches, with most of the players in Trinidad & Tobago having not played for a couple of years due to the pandemic, we expect that most of the players who represent the U-20s will be North American based. NACTM Soccer Camps set to host U-20 Trinidad & Tobago Men’s Football Combine in Washington, D.C.

Washington, DC. – February 3, 2022– The North American Caribbean Training Method (NACTM) Soccer Camps will be hosting a Combine for the U-20 Trinidad & Tobago Men’s Football team in Washington, D.C. from April 16-17, as Head Coach Angus Eve and his staff plan to finalize their roster for the CONCACAF Qualifiers scheduled in June. The Combine will be used as a platform for North American based players of Trinbagonian descent to showcase their talents to earn a roster spot for the Qualifiers. The Combine will be both invite and open to players looking to be selected for Eve’s 22 man roster.

NACTM Soccer Camps Director Justin Reid is excited about the opportunity to host the TTFA, “We are excited to provide an opportunity for players of Trinbagonian descent to showcase their talents to earn a roster spot on the U-20s. There is so much talent in North America for players of Trinbagonian descent and we are happy to be able to offer this platform.” The NACTM is not the first program to host a Combine for players of Trinbagonian descent however. In 2011, Anthony Lambert of Champions Academy in Brooklyn invited Anton Corneal who has recently been re-appointed as the Technical Director of the TTFA to evaluate players for an upcoming tournament.

In 2019, a US based organization also provided a Combine held in Atlanta for the TTFA U-17s attended by then head coach Stern John. That event featured 40 extremely talented players between Florida to New York. Of the 40 players, 6 were selected to participate in the U-17 CONCACAF Qualifiers. Reid further explained that the “benefits of such a camp are endless and I am happy that the TTFA is continuing to think outside of the box to identify talent. The goal is never for the North American based players to dominate the TTFA rosters, but to compliment the talent that is already in the country. Now, if it so happens that 12 of the 22 roster spots are filled by players from North America then so be it, but that is not the primary goal. We want to see the TTFA have success on the CONCACAF level.”

NACTM Soccer Academy to re-brand as NACTM Soccer Camps

Washington, DC. – May 12, 2021– The North America Caribbean Training Method is set to re-brand as the NACTM Soccer Camps. Launched in January 2020, the NACTM aims to bring high level soccer training to ALL playing levels: Recreation, Intermediate, and Advanced to contribute to player development across the country.

The reason for the re-brand is because the NACTM had been consistently confused with being a club. This re-brand now helps the program to focus solely on offering a variety of camps for ALL playing levels ranging from half day camps for Recreation players, to day camps for Intermediate level players, to ID Camps for Advanced level players.

According to NACTM Soccer Camps Director Justin Reid, “We want our prospective customers/clients to know exactly what we offer based on our name. North America Caribbean Training Method was too long of a title, and the novice soccer parent would have no idea what we were offering just based on the name. We’d have to give an explanation each time, which is time consuming and could be resolved by changing our title to NACTM Soccer Camps on all marketing materials.” According to Reid, the re-brand will also affect the url as the name “Academy” will be dissolved, as well as the logo as soccer camps will be added beneath the current logo.

The name NACTM Soccer Camps has already begun to take shape online in the content sections of all of the pages. The full effect will take place overtime as the name will be changed on its social media outlets as well as marketing packages by May 31st.

NACTM launches its first Orlando Soccer Camp

Orlando, FL. – March 12, 2021– The NACTM Soccer Academy Orlando camp kicked off in sunny Florida for the first time in the history of the organization this past Sunday. Despite the windy conditions, the players in attendence enjoyed learning and hearing from the different coaches who flew into Orlando.

The mini-camp was just a one day event from 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm and it gave the players an opportunity to learn the NACTM Soccer Academy way of training. Players engaged in various player development exercises like learning how to juggle (on the run), how to increase their speed of play, and how to improve for technical development advancement.

The mini-camp started with dribbling, change of direction, and juggling. Then advanced to speed and agility exercises, 2 v 1 and 2 v 2, shooting, then finished up with a game. “We want to thank the players in Orlando for providing us the opportunity to work with them. This was just a short one-day camp, but this was the prelude to more things to come in the Orlando area this summer. We will be hosting a camp from June 21-25 and the players will have the opportunity to learn the NACTM Soccer Academy way in more detail,” said Director of Camps Justin Reid.

NACTM to offer a free camp in Orlando this Sunday

Washington, D.C. – March 2, 2021– This Sunday the NACTM Orlando Soccer Academy Camp will kick off with a promotional event for its June 21-25 summer camp. This will mark the first event in Orlando since the program launched in March 2020 just days prior to the pandemic.

“We are excited to restart the NACTM in Orlando, a city whose youth players are starving for better player development options,” said NACTM Director Justin Reid. Orlando is the top youth soccer city in the state of Florida, recently surpassing Miami and the city has embraced soccer even more since Orlando City became a franchise of Major League Soccer in 2015.

The camp is only for an hour, but the players will receive a uniform and get the opportunity to meet the NACTM Soccer Academy coaches. Not much will be accomplished in just an hour of training, but the hope is that the players will leave the camp learning at least one thing that they didn’t know, leading to them wanting to come back on June 21st to experience the full camp experience.

“I started attending camps outside of my regular soccer team when I was 10 years old. My first camp was overnight at the Lincoln Phillips Soccer School in Emmitsburg, MD. The camp experiences gave me a different environment and different voices of coaches. It also allowed me to play with other players who I necessarily wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to play with or against. Camps helped to make me a better player,” said Reid when reflecting on his time as a youth soccer player who attended camps in Maryland.

After missing most of 2020, the NACTM is looking forward to re-starting in 2021

WASHINGTON, DC, February 21, 2021– Today, the NACTM Soccer Academy, a national soccer school and camp program, finalized its summer schedule for its upcoming camps in Atlanta, Baltimore, Brooklyn, Charlotte, D.C. Houston, Orlando, and other cities across the United States.

The NACTM Soccer Academy will provide exciting camp experiences for boys and girls, ages 5-18, to receive specialized training based on the methodology and curriculum of some of the best youth soccer development coaches in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. Young players will enjoy improving their skills while competing in small-sided games and camp tournaments. 5-12 year old campers will receive a ball, uniform, and player evaluations. 13-18 year old campers will receive a uniform and player evaluations.

“We are really excited to be back in 2021 to offer specialized summer camps to youth soccer players around the country,” said Justin Reid, Director of Camps for the NACTM Soccer Academy. “We are also pumped to give young boys and girls the opportunity to immerse themselves in NACTM culture. NACTM teams up with SWATS 404 and TAOSA for Atlanta Camp

The NACTM Soccer Academy has partnered with both SWATS Team 404 and The Art of Soccer Academy (TAOSA) FC in Atlanta for its upcoming summer soccer camp in Marietta, Georgia from July 19-23, 2021.

The details of the partnership will consist of the three programs participating in promotion and collaboration in hosting the camp in Marietta. In return, the NACTM will provide players at the camp who are unaffiliated with clubs an opportunity to tryout with club TAOSA FC. For those who are affiliated with clubs, they will be encouraged to join Southside Pick-up in a free play environment on Sundays in College Park where the players get together and enjoy playing the beautiful game with youth from the entire metro area.

NACTM Director Justin Reid states, “I had the privilege to meet Coach Wayne and Coach David [the founders of the two respective programs] when I visited Atlanta in January. I enjoyed visiting the facility where their teams train and host pick-up soccer. Upon speaking with them I came to find that all three of us shared the same love and passion for the game as well as the development of the youth. When you incorporate all of our programs into the mix we are reaching three different touchpoints that made it obvious to connect. Our focus is on developing a strong player development centered one week camp that the kids in Marietta and the surrounding metro area can learn a great deal from and enjoy. Our coaches are from out of the area and it’s always great for players to hear a different coaching perspective and to see different exercises. Coach Wayne and Coach David are focused on providing an environment where players can enjoy the game without being overcoached. In addition, they are building a club in South west Atlanta, also known as the SWATS. It made perfect sense for us to unite and see how we could serve the surrounding communities through collaboration.”

SWATS Team 404 is a  non-club affiliated team of friends that play together in local tournaments. With the understanding of the location and soccer demographics in the metro area, many of the youth play separately. SWATS Team 404 was created to foster and promote community and consistent opportunities for the youth to play together with those they have genuine connections with.

Southside pickup was started by Coach Wayne with the support of Coach David to provide a place for the youth in the SWATS to play freely and safely with minimal coaching. NACTM launches registration for players of Caribbean descent

The NACTM has launched a program for youth soccer players ages 9-17 of Caribbean descent to be evaluated by an NACTM scout to potentially play for the national team of there descent. There are 14 countries, all English speaking in the Caribbean that the program will evaluate players to join: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago. The idea came about when NACTM Director Justin Reid ran the TTFA Talent Identification program in 2020 where he and his staff of scouts helped to identify 8 players of Trinbagonian descent born in North America to play in the U-20 CONCACAF Women’s Qualifiers in February 2020. Due to their efforts, the TTFA women’s team made it to the quarterfinals eventually losing to Mexico.

Reid explains, “this program is important to help the entire CONCACAF region. The Caribbean has the most number of teams who compete in CONCACAF, but aside from Haiti, all of the other nations are weak links. So if we are going to help the best teams who come out of the CONCACAF region compete with UEFA, CONMEBOL, and the top federations in the world, then we have to strenghten the quality of the Caribbean.”

That will be a tall task as aside from improving the player pools in the various associations and federations in the Caribbean, they face many more institutional problems that could hinder the NACTM identification program.

“Although we want to help the Caribbean federations and associations, we also want to make parents aware that the level of professionalism in many of the federations and associations may be an issue for them. For many of the players who do make it to the player pool, it will be a culture shock, and it is important that we notify their parents that they can’t expect their child to have the same amenities as they do here in the U.S. and Canada. Parents will need to understand that their child is playing for the national team for international experience only, and everything else is what it is.”

The program has 5 clear and defined steps for a player who wishes to join a Caribbean federation’s player pool:

• An NACTM scout will come out to one of your league games/tournaments and evaluate your performance. 
• If you are of a national team standard, then we will invite you to one of our nearby camps to be evaluated by our staff of coaches for a second evaluation. 
• If you impress at the camp, then we will send your evaluation to the Caribbean federation of your descent. If you do not play your best during the camp and if our coaches feel that they will need to work with you a bit more, then we will recommend that you attend additional camps in the future. 
• If the Caribbean federation believes that you are a good fit, then they will invite you to the island to train with the local players. If you impress during this camp, then they will more than likely add you to the player pool. 
• Once you are added to the Caribbean federation’s player pool, then we will continue to monitor your progress with your club team and we encourage you to sign up for our camps as we are in continous direct contact with Caribbean federation technical staffs to learn more about what they are looking for in a player. This provides you the player with an advantage.

NACTM to donate a portion of camp proceeds to St. Kitts and Nevis Foundation

The NACTM is proud to announce that it will be donating a portion of the camp proceeds in each city to an association that supports the culture or the Caribbean. This summer, the NACTM will be in 9 cities across the country where the Caribbean diaspora is strong. The program’s directors and coaches all come from a Caribbean background and they believe that the region must be united inorder to support one another.

“The Caribbean is a region that is very important to us. Every member of the NACTM came here to the U.S. in some capacity or the other from the Caribbean whether it is of parentage like myself, or directly from the islands like many of our coaches,” said Director Justin Reid.

The Caribbean has a rich tradition in the culture of music, arts, football, and much more. The diaspora is spread throughout the United States and Canada and it is important that it unites not just during Carnival. The NACTM will select 9 charities, one in each city to donate a portion of the camp proceeds. “Giving back is essential to build the diaspora, we will be sure to spread the proceeds across associations of as many islands as we can, ” said Reid.

Winter and spring camps will begin in the Washington, DC/Baltimore regions, home of the NACTM in February. Summer camps will begin in Orlando on June 21st and end in Baltimore on August 13th.
